Scans can be performed early in the pregnancy to help establish your estimated due date (EDD). This allows for more accurate scheduling for subsequent scans. EDD estimation is also more accurate earlier in the pregnancy.

Early scans can be performed if there is any concerns around pain and / or bleeding. First trimester ultrasound can be used to help establish the location of a pregnancy.

Sometimes early scans are performed if there is a suspicion of twins (or more). At this stage the sonographer can more easily determine the type of twinning.

The nuchal / 12 week scan can be performed anywhere from 11 weeks 0 days to 13 weeks 6 days. However the optimal time is close to 12 weeks 0 days. If opting for the combined screen (MSS1) your sonographer will attempt to measure something called the nuchal translucency. This measurement, combined with a blood test will return a ‘risk score’ to your LMC.

Some women decide to have non invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) performed. In this instance we can still do the basic anatomy check, measurements and placenta check but will not record the nuchal translucency measurement.

Also, some women choose not to have the nuchal translucency recorded due to personal preference. In that case we happily respect your decision and can offer the basic anatomy and placental check.

  • Preperation: None / empty bladder

    Cost: $60

A growth scan can be performed for many reasons. Some examples include to check the amniotic fluid levels, a history of small babies, or to check the fetal position.

During the scan the sonographer will measure the babies head, tummy and leg bone. A basic review of the anatomy is also performed. At the end of the scan the sonographer will be able to tell you what weight the baby is.

If you are keeping the gender a surprise it is a good idea to inform the sonographer at the beginning of the scan.

Your doctor or LMC might request an ultrasound in the first 6 weeks after having your baby. This is usually performed to ensure there are no pregnancy contents still remaining inside of the endometrium / uterus.
